Planning for the future: Arrangements for the assistance of people planning for the future of people with impaired capacity
Abstract
The carers of people with impaired capacity, whether caused by developmental disability, acquired brain injury, chronic mental illness, or conditions such as dementia, frequently want to make plans for a future situation when they are no longer able to care for themselves or their loved ones. In an ageing population, demand for such services is rising. Research indicates that there is a significant unmet need for legal services for these people.5People with impaired capacity and their parents and carers need better access to legal planning and related services; and services that are inexpensive, well-informed,independent, reliable and sensitive to their needs. Meeting the needs of people with impaired capacity is an issue of fundamental human rights.
