Abstract

This paper will examine maritime terrorism and discuss its effects on Australia by an examination of:

  • the growing threat of maritime terrorism; 
  • the characteristics of piracy and whether maritime terrorism fits within the current definition of piracy;the International Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation and its Protocol; 
  • Australia's efforts in this legal arena including the adoption of the Convention and Protocol into domestic law;
  • Australia's efforts to fight terrorism generally and at sea.
